Get to know Riverside, CA

Riverside is the county seat in the Inland Empire area.  In the 1860’s Louis Prevost started the California Silk Center Association.  When this failed, John North purchased some of the land and formed the Southern California Colony Association to develop the area and began announcing the colony in 1870.  Navel orange trees were first planted in 1871.  In 1874 Eliza Tibbetts received three Brazilian navel orange trees from  a horticulturist friend, William Saunders.  The oranges had not thrived in Florida, but were so successful that full-scale planting began, launching California’s citrus industry.  The city was incorporated in 1883.  The development of refrigerated railroad cars and irrigation systems helped to make Riverside the country’s richest city by 1895.  Of the original orange trees, one was trampled by a cow the first year it was planted.  The second was transplanted to the Mission Inn property by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, but died in 1922.  The final tree now resides at Magnolia and Arlington Ave.  It is surrounded by a protective fence and a stone marker honoring Eliza Tibbetts.  Today there are still citrus production and packing houses, but the industry is in  decline.  The economy now is based more in manufacturing as well as non-manufacturing business firms.  The main employers are the County of Riverside, Riverside Unified School District, and the University of California, Riverside.  Popular attractions include the Mission Inn, the largest mission revival style building in America, and the Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree.
