The City of Angels is America’s second most populous and California’s most populous city.  It was founded by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve in 1781.  The city was incorporated in 1850, five months before California was declared a state.  The Southern Pacific Railroad reached Los Angeles in 1876.  Oil was discovered in the area in 1892 and by the 1920’s California was the country’s largest oil producer.  In 1910 Hollywood merged with Los Angeles.  By 1921 80% of the world’s film industry was in L.A., helping buffer the city from the Great Depression.  In 1932 Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics.  The city was a center for manufacturing during World War II, with six major aircraft manufacturers headquartered in the city.  The city boomed in the postwar years, spreading into the San Fernando Valley.  The city hosted the Summer Olympics for a second time in 1984 and was the most financially successful Olympics to date.   The economy of the city is driven by a number of industries, including international trade, entertainment, aerospace, technology, oil, fashion, and tourism.   It is home to six Fortune 500 companies, including Occidental Petroleum.  Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and Universal Pictures are all within city limits.  Some of the largest employers include the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California.  The city is home to many landmarks and attractions, some of the most popular including the Chinese Theatre and the Rose Bowl.  It is home to many sports, including MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, and WNBA professional teams and NCAA teams.
