Moving on a Budget: 6 Ways to Save

|
General Moving

With all of the costs that come with moving, you should always be looking for ways to save. First off, there’s your rent and security deposit or a down payment on a home. Then, there’s the cost of facilitating the move itself. Whether you use a moving company or take part in a DIY move, moving will always cost at least a few hundred dollars and sometimes thousands for long distance moves. If you’re concerned about the cost of moving here are a few tips to help you save:

1. Raise funds through a Moving Sale

During the moving process, you may realize that there are some items you don’t want to bring to your new home. If you’re moving on a budget, hosting a moving sale can help alleviate some of the costs. In the process of packing up, you may even find some items you didn’t realize were valuable. Instead of rotting away in storage, maybe that old pack of baseball cards could pay for your whole move! Outside of holding a garage or yard sale, there are also plenty of online options to help you sell your things. Even if you don’t find anything valuable to sell, at the very least hosting a moving sale will save time on your move. The less time a moving company spends on your move, the less you’ll have to pay.

2. Compare Costs

One of the most important steps to take when planning a move is to compare costs. If you’re on a strict budget, be sure to do thorough research on multiple moving options. While you may think a DIY move could save you money, that may not always be the case. Plus, taking part in a DIY move creates the stress of having to call friends and relatives to help. Renting a truck, paying for fuel and moving materials could end up costing you more than a moving company in the end. If you do decide to use a moving company, be sure to do some research. If a price seems too good to be true, you may not be dealing with a legitimate moving company. Luckily, all moving companies on Move Matcher are fully licensed, bonded, and insured.

 3. Avoid Peak Days

Most people who move have little control over the date that they move. However, if you do have any say, there are a few days to avoid. If possible, try to avoid weekend days in the summer months. At those times, moving companies are busier than ever. During their peak times of the year, moving companies tend to have higher rates than the rest of the year. If you do have to move in the summer, try your best to move on a weekday in the middle of the month. While you may not have complete control of the timing of your move, at the very least try to avoid the busiest days of the year.

4. Find Free Moving Materials

Along with the cost of moving labor and travel fees, a number of moving companies also require materials fees. A good way to save is to provide those materials yourself. In particular, the boxes necessary for moving can easily be found for little or no cost. Home improvement stores, grocery stores, family or friends are all great places to find free moving boxes.

5. Pack Yourself

While most moving companies offer packing services, if you want to save you should handle that aspect yourself. Once you are packed, moving companies will be happy to load and unload your belongings at their normal hourly rate. On the other hand, If you have a moving company do your packing for you, they may add an additional fee to the loading and unloading costs. Just make sure to label every box to make things easier for you and your movers.

6. Transfer Furniture

When you’re moving to a new home or apartment, it can be tempting to buy all new furniture. Perhaps you want your new home to have a completely different feel. However, if you’re looking to save, the best solution is to keep most of your current furniture. Splurging on a new couch or television could really push your move over budget. If you do eventually want to change the style of your home, try updating things one piece at a time instead of buying all new furniture at once.

Moving can come with plenty of costs. However, as long as you’re well prepared and keep things simple you should be able to keep your move under budget!
