Whenever the new year approaches, many of us think about the changes we want to make in our lives. Whether it’s a home improvement project, a new diet, or kicking a bad habit, a new year is a good place for a fresh start. However, if you really want to turn your life around, moving can be a great option. Here are five reasons moving is a great way to start off the new year.

1. A Chance to Start Over

Perhaps you’re frustrated by the area in which you currently live. Maybe there’s not enough to do, or you’ve outgrown a livelier neighborhood. Either way, moving gives you a chance find an ideal area to live in. Whether you’re headed for the trendiest spot in a big city or a farmhouse in the middle of the country, moving gives you a chance to change things up. Even a move down the hallway in the same building can give you a new perspective on life. If you feel like you’re caught in a rut, moving may be the perfect solution to break out of it.

2. It Can Help You Accomplish New Year’s Resolutions

When we make New Year’s Resolutions, it’s usually because we want to make a change in our lives. Often, a New Year’s Resolution can require a major shift in your normal routine. In that sense, moving can help you to more easily accomplish your goals for the new year. Because a new home will give you a fresh start, it also requires you to create new routines. This concept isn’t just conjecture; it’s backed up by research. According to a study from the University of Bath, people are more likely to change their habits in the first three months following a move. Therefore, if you need to make some positive changes in your life, moving may be just the place to start.

3. Easier to Line Up with School/Work

One of the main reasons summer is the most popular time of year to move is that it is the best time of year for children to switch schools. If you’re unable to move in the summer, winter break is the best time to move with children. Entering a new school after winter break is much easier than in the middle of a semester. Additionally, workplaces tend to be more flexible around the Holiday season. If you’re moving for your job, you should be able to take some time off to orchestrate your move.

4. Reduced Rent

Typically, rent is the highest in the summer. As summer is the most popular time to move, landlords are able to raise rents because the demand is higher. On the other hand, apartments can become much more difficult to fill in the winter. Therefore, if you’re able to get a lease that begins in January or February, you can save on your rent and security deposit. Additionally, the lack of demand in the winter could give you a better choice of living space.  While everyone else struggles to find an apartment in the summer, you’ll be comfortably settled into your new digs.

5. Lower Moving Costs

Similarly to the rental market,  winter marks the slow season for the moving industry. Due to the lower demand, moving companies usually offer lower rates compared to the peak season. Plus, waiting until after the new year will allow you to enjoy the holidays without the stress of moving. Give yourself a couple of weeks to decompress and then get moving. As long as you book your move before the spring, there’s a good chance you’ll be paying much lower rates.

As the calendar turns from 2017 to 2018, many people will seek to make changes in their lives. One way to start making positive changes is to move to a new home. Moving allows you to break out of your old routines and start forming new habits. Plus, by moving early in the year you can save on rent and moving costs. A great 2018 could be just one move away!
